As someone who struggled with self-injury for more than 30 years, I can speak to the sentiments expressed in this article. Cutting, for me, was a coping mechanism. Period. I worked very hard at hiding this behavior and so to believe that cutting was a call for attention is totally misguided. Self-injury is a disorder rooted in shame and as a result, few people will openly speak about it. This contributes to misunderstanding by many. Over the course of many months, I have learned some of the underlying causes for my behavior and as a result have just celebrated my first year of being injury free! If more people would ask questions instead of just judging what they see, more self-injurers might have the confidence to come forward and seek out the help they need.

My MP hasn’t signed the EDM yet. I did get a response basically saying "it's not possible to sign EDMs while the house of commons is in recess, but I'll have a look when we're back". Here's to hoping. I actually came across this entry by chance when searching for "edm179", so here's the URL to the EDM online: http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=31752&SESSION=885

I like this post Jen, I've been thinking along the same lines myself recently. I would like my PC to be more Free, my life to be more envorinmentally friendly and so on.

I came to the conclusion there it doesn't always seem to be an end and in cases where there is one, it's almost impossible without denying yourself something quite important, like being able to get to work in a timely manner (I'm on call 24/7 and work 20 miles away), like having a working PC (hardware, like almost everything is non-Free) and so on.

So, yeah, I guess the only reasonable answer to is assess whether the balance is right.

"it was decided that the correct answer to “chocolate or lemon” is “yes please.” "

I do it ALL THE TIME.
The GF used to ask: "What do you want as a dessert?" Answered: "Yes".
(insert smiley here)

Anyway. Merry Christmas, Russ and Jen.

My club, Stockport County recently made a similar move with the supporters taking over the club. Basicly the previous owner had decided he didn't want us any more so he sold all our good players over a period of 2 years then sold the team to the trust. The level of support to such a low level team is incredible.

FC United of Manchester is a great example of the support a club can get. They are 4 tiers below professional football, yet they manage to pull in crowds of up to 6000 people. The club is 100% owned by fans and have a system where no matter how much you donate, you get 1 share and one share only, which means 1 vote at any meeting. Its almost democratic :D.

I think you'll find the correct term is "Your Grace" ;)

Mandy keeps telling me I'm a Hobbit, but I don't think she believes it quite enough to get me *a* nicy shiny 19" flatscreen, let alone two.

As for the servers - not so much going for retro as going for cheap - we were given them both. I'm sure we could do the same job much easier and neater by spending money, but that would defeat the point of it, which is mostly to see if we can.

Louisa you are defnitely right about "girl" managers. The ones I've worked with tend to look after themselves and you have to be very careful what you say in front of them in case its used against you later - even though I'm a bloke.

There was one female manager I did a contract for (I'm a techie/hobbit) who was so happy with the work I did she bought me bottles of wine/chocolates etc when I left the company. Unfortunately, when I used her as a reference she bad-mouthed me to my current employer. Luckily, they took a chance and offered me the job anyway - I think they must have been intrigued buy a guy who could actually choose a bad referee! Looking back I remember disagreeing with this lady over several technical problems and she decided to have a pop - even though I was courteous at the time.

As for "girl hobbits" I must confess I have only known about 4 out of probably over 100 techies I have worked with (all of them were very good). I think its a shame because IT can be a very enjoyable and (more importantly to some) highly paid profession.

Finally, just to show you how strange the fairer sex can be my other referee is a female manager who thinks I'm the best thing since sliced bread. Very strange creatures you all are!

Very nice monitors "Prince Bishop" - I bet you wish you had them at work instead of that 14 inch battered Dell you use. Oh well, at least us Hobbits get twin 19 inch digital monitors as standard (sorry, Hobbits dont usually have much to boast about!)

I like the dual Pentium file server even if my mobile phone has more power - but I suppose you are going for the retro look? Of course, you could replace the CD server with an IPOD? You'd save all that lovely space to make more room for your Live Roleplaying groups gear which you will need if everyone keeps getting killed ;)
